About the area |
Amelia county was created from Prince George and Brunswick Counties. However, in 1750's, Prince Edward County was formed from Amelia County and then Nottoway County was also formed from the county in the 1780's. Sailor’s (Sayler’s) Creek Battlefield Historical State park was the scene of the last major battle of the Civil War. The Hillsman House which was used as a federal field hospital during the battle, restored and located at the park. Two of the county parks are the Joe H. Paulette Memorial Recreation park, where the annual county fair is held in September, and Tom Scott Recreational park, where the annual summer Beef Festival is held which draws people who love their beef to a day of food and music. Don't forget top come to the Bluegrass festivals held in Spring and Fall and above all the annual Amelia Day which is held in May at Courthouse Square.
