About the area
Tthe Town of Appomattox is situated a short distance from the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park where Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant in the spring of 1865. The McLean House on the site with its well furnished parlor was suitable for the two generals to meet and put an end to the Civil War. The park covers over 1,700 acres in which are located various plant and animal communities, streams, wetlands, forests and agricultural lands. When the Norfolk & Western railroad donated the Appomattox depot to the Town of Appomattox, the town decided to commemorate the event with an annual Appomattox Railroad festival. The festival, held in October, takes place over two days in the Main street area and includes a parade, arts & craft vendors, live bands, train exhibits, fireworks, food, and a lot of activities for the entire family.
