About the area
Since country music has come from many areas in our country, it's hard to imagine why this city is called "The Birthplace of Country Music". However, this city is where the first country music recordings for national distribution were made and who would argue with Congress which made it official around 1998. Tennessee Ernie Ford was born in this city but on the Tennessee side. In homage to its place in this genre of music; country music murals and monuments have been created along State Street. In addition the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance museum was built in the Tennessee part of Bristol and displays collections of musical instruments and memorabilia from country music legends Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and Tennessee Ernie Ford. The museum also presents live musical entertainment every Thursday night. If that isn't enough of the music, you will want to attend the annual Bristol Border Bash with concerts during the Summer in downtown Bristol. For a complete departure from this country stuff, there is the Bristol Ballet Company which produces several recitals culminating in their annual End-of-Year gala recital at at Virginia Intermont College.
