About the area |
This town has known several names; Magazine, Daltonsburgh, Marysville, Smithfield, Charlotte Courthouse and finally Charlotte Court House. The old jail in the Charlotte Court House Historic District now serves as the Charlotte County Museum. The exhibit dedicated to Patrick Henry, John Randolph and David K. E. Bruce, former Charlotte County residents, who made important contributions locally, nationally and internationally, is a permanent one. Other exhibits are on display from time to time. Staunton Hill is a mansion house erected by the Bruce family around 1848 on the grounds of the Staunton Hill Plantation; a property of over 5,000 acres. The plantation yielded, with the help of slave labor, wheat, oats, hay and livestock, four to five thousand barrels of corn and grew up to one million hills of tobacco.
