The first court hearing took place in Independence and this courthouse kept operations till the first years of the 20th century. The county seat witnessed the construction of the new courthouse 4 years after the first one got closed. This fine building is now a museum and the home of a non profit organization as well. |

About the area |
The residents of this territory call it the "Heart of the Highlands". The county was founded back in the late 1700's and was named after a senator, Mr. William Grayson. Old town was the first county seat which got moved back in the late 1800ôs, to the actual county, the city Independence. The spirit of the people of Grayson is continuously represented in each local event such as the Bridle Creek Falls Festival or the Whitetop Mountain Maple Festival. |
