About the area |
The city of emporia started out as two separate towns. The Town of Hicksford, along the Meherrin River was first visited by explorers as early as 1670 and then was settled around 1710. The Town of Belfield was founded around 1798 and the two towns merged around 1887 to form Emporia which was not incorporated as a city until approximately 80 years later. The city today has the advantage of being at the crossroads of Interstate 95 and US 58 as well as the crossroads of the CSX and the Norfolk-Southern railroads. The Meherrin River Arts Council annually produces a concert series that features nationally known entertainers. The concerts are held in the Emporia Greensville Performing Arts Center. The Arts council also contributes to the community by producing a performing arts series for students in the local schools.
