About the area
The citizens of Hampton are lucky to have two interesting museums to visit. Guests should take advantage of the opportunity to visit them as well. In the Hampton History museum you can see and go into a Kecoughtan Indian longhouse, enter the hold of a tobacco ship and visit the replica of the ruins of the city burned to the ground during the Civil War. The Hampton University museum is located in the Huntington building on the grounds of historic Hampton University. One of the three main exhibits in this museum are Soul & Spirit:Two Hundred Years of Art with its history of African American art and works of art from the earliest African American painter to works by contemporary artists. Another featured exhibit Enduring Legacy: Native Peoples, Native Arts is a collection of American Indian art and artifacts. The third featured exhibit The Art of Africa: Power, Beauty, Community has over 200 artifacts from across sub-Saharan Africa. Among the other collections in the museum which are displayed from time to time are the Asian and Pacific Islands and African American fine art collections.
