About the area
Who has not heard of Colonial Williamsburg? This historic area on over 300 acres includes over 80 reconstructed original buildings and hundreds of other homes, shops and public buildings. Here skilled artisans in period costumes reenact 18th-century methods of the tradeshops. Costumed performers act as founding fathers and 18th-century residents as they debate the issues at the heart of the Revolution. There are also rare animal breeds and restored gardens here. Some of the buildings which have been restored are the Benjamin Powell House; Christiana Cambell's Tavern; Raleigh Tavern where plans were made to join other colonies in the American Revolution; the Courthouse; Silversmith, Printer, Apothecary, Prentis Store, Tarpley's Store, Milliner and Wigmaker shops and Richard Charlton’s Coffeehouse which was the 1765 hotbed of political, business and social activity
