About the area
At first there was Jouette's tavern, where the courthouse was located. In addition to a place where justices and visitors to the monthly courts could find refreshment and lodging; it was also a gathering place, kept legal notices and newspapers on file, distributed mail and was the scene of plenty of news and gossip. People in the area could also purchase necessities at the tavern. This was all previous to around 1782. A post office was established in the Fall of 1880 at was now called Louisa Courthouse. The town's economy and service places consisted of 4 general merchandise stores, a silversmith, blacksmith, 2 carriage makers, a shoe maker, cabinet maker, saddler, 2 taverns, a milliner, 2 lawyer's offices and a physician's office; however no boundaries were established so that the population could not be determined. The arrival of the Louisa Railroad, still called Louisa Courthouse, around 1838 proved to be significant to the town's growth. The incorporation of the Town of Louisa was approved around 1873.
