Stuart Magistrate serves as the magistrate court of Patrick county in the Twenty-First judicial district of Virginia.

About the area

When the town was founded around 1792 it was named Taylorsville; but after the Civil War it was named to honor a Calvary Confederate General who was born and raised a short distance from this town. At some point in time the Danville & Western railroad line came to and ended in Stuart. The railroad was served by a hand operated train turntable in the downtown area known as the Depot. The historic Star theatre was opened in the late 1940's. It has recently been renovated and presents theater productions and concerts.
