About the area
The Manassas museum has a great collection of artifacts from the area's history especially their extensive exhibit of the Civil War era. This area is where many of the early significant battles of the Civil War took place. several historic sites are part of the Manassas Museum system. Liberia House, circa 1825, was erected on a parcel of land over 1,600 acres in size and only acquired its name after a number of years. Mayfield Earthwork Fort is located on land occupied by Native Americans in prehistoric times. At the site you can see part of the foundation of the Hooe mansion site Mayfield, portions of the Civil War earthwork fortification and a replica of the Quaker guns left by the Confederates upon there withdrawal to Richmond, masking their removal of artillery. The James & Marion Payne Memorial Railroad Heritage Gallery, located in The Manassas Railroad Depot, has on exhibit artifacts and historic photographs representative of 150 years of railroad history in Manassas.
