About the area |
You know about Barack Obama; but do you know about the son of a black slave, George Washington, who founded Centralia in 1875. He might also be considered one of the early philanthropists in the United States. Washington was responsible bringing back Centralia from financial panic sweeping the country in 1893. He purchased food and other goods and distributed them to area residents; as well as lots from bankrupt owners and held the mortgages until they could pay them off. Play hooky one afternoon and play the 9 hole public golf course at the Elks Golf Course.
