About the area |
Wausau means "faraway place" in the Ojibwe language. The Wisconsin River runs through the city. The notable Wausau Insurance Company is now Liberty Mutual. The area is known for the cultivation of American ginseng and red granite is mined here. Granite Peak Si Area at Rib Mountain at 700 feet is the highest skiable mountain in the state.
