About the area
The displays at the Barbour County Historical museum are representative of several periods in time from 1635, through the civil war, to the early 1900's, to modern day. There are exhibits of collections of guns, cannons, knives, weapons, railroad artifacts, ceramics, newspapers, various manuscripts and publications, clothing, and numerous flags. Also displayed are the Myers switchboard and the unusual exhibit of the Philippi Mummies which toured at fairs and shows all across North America and even parts of Europe as part of the P.T. Barnum's Circus. The Philippi Covered bridge, built around 1852 and located next to the museum is the only remaining "double barreled" covered bridge serving a United States highway. was built in 1852 by Lemuel Chenoweth, one of America's master covered bridge builders.
