About the area
This city was originally called Vandalia and went on to become the seat of Fayette County around 1837. Thirty six years later the name of the city was changed to be named for the Marquis de Lafayette whose statue now looks down upon Fayetteville from the Fayette County Courthouse lawn. During the Civil War the city was held by both the South and North and fought over four times. The The first of these battles took place in the fall of 1862 Fayetteville went on to benefit and profit from the discovery of the lowest sulfur, highest grade coal on earth which was mined extensively during the early 1900's. This city, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, has now become the destination for visitors who want to take part in such outdoor sports as white water kayaking or just shop in the town among its shops dealing in arts and crafts, antiques, outdoor sports equipment and art.
