During the 1920's the town was one of the most important communities in the vast coal fields of the region and the offices of the region’s largest coal company, the New River Company, still exist. The town's downtown section remains almost the same as when coal mining was booming here and the New River Company's repair shops and foundry building as well as the two large smokestacks of the former repair shop used by the McKell Coal & Coke Company located just outside town, in Kilsyth. These have not been rebuilt or restored to there original condition and the town lives on its everyday fashion.
