About the area |
This city which was incorporated a few short years after the beginning of the 20th century is the largest city in Fayette County. It celebrates three major festivals throughout the year. The annual Railroad Festival / Depot Days held each August is the city's way of keeping railroad history alive with vendors, food, fun and some local history. The vendors represent local artisans and train collectors. A huge model train layout is set up for the occasion in the Lewis Community Center. The White Oak Branch Depot, which is on the National Historic Registry is over 100 years old. The annual Oak Leaf Festival and Parade starts the the week before Labor Day. There's everything at this event from wine and cheese tasting to live music, to a talent show, to food and vendors. A part of this festival is the annual Firemanâs Rodeo with competition in the obstacle course, ladder throw, tug-of-war, bucket brigade, hose relay and a water battle. Fireman's Rodeo also takes place at this time with their "Parade of Lights", competitions, and many other activities. |
