| About the area |
Smithers lies along the Kanawha river and a small portion of the town lies in Kanawha county. The city is named after the family who were early settlers to the area and who owned over 2200 acres of coal-rich land under the name of Peabody Coal Fields. It was incorporated in the 1930's. The culture here is related to the miners who lived here and the Italian-American heritage.
