When the Hampshire Southern Railroad completed the spur from Green Springs to Romney around 1884 and then continued construction through Moorefield to Petersburg at the end of the first decade of the 20th century; the depot in Petersburg was operated as a general merchandise store. A few years into the 21st century the City of Petersburg purchased and renovated the historic building and renamed it the South Side Depot. The store now offers merchandise in a manner reminiscent of the authentic West Virginia Heritage. In April the depot presents a train rides with Civil War era Soldiers replete with reenactments, story telling and skits.
