Lewisburg has won reconition as a place to visit by several different organizations. The National Trust for Historic Preservation selected the city as one of a dozen distinctive destinations; its been recognized as a Top Southern Mountain Town in America and how cool can you get when Frommer's Budget Travel Magazine voted it America's Coolest Small Town. In addition an area over 230 acres in size in the heart of Lewisburg was designated a National Register Historic District. All this after being in existence for over 220 years. The man for whom the town was named came to the Greenbrier area as a surveyor for the Greenbrier Land Company around 1750, and found Lewis Spring on the site of the present town of Lewisburg. The town of Lewisburg grew around this natural spring which today is enclosed in a stone springhouse near the General Lewis Inn, and is thought to be the location of the original Fort Union. Many of Lewisburg’s most beautiful preserved homes and historical sites were built in the 1830′s.
