About the area

The city of New Cumberland started life as Cuppy Town when it was laid out around 1836 and often referred to as Brickyard Bend by the riverboat captains on the Ohio river. The city at one time had brickyards and coal and clay mines with many of the brickyards along the shores of the Ohio River. Those industries passed on and the employment now available to the city's residents is in service areas and at nearby Weirton Steel or Mountaineer Park, a racing and gaming resort.
