About the area |
A trapper is the first known visitor to the area and he settled here around 1764 followed by early settlers who began to arrive in the 1770's. The city was incorporated as far back as the 1780's. There was quite a bit of traffic to city as the different modes of transportation were developed. In the 1830's the Northwestern Turnpike reached as far as Clarksburg and as 1840 dawned, a daily line of stages and a regular mail service connected with the Ohio River steamers at Parkersburg. Finally at the beginning of the late 1850's the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad reached Clarksburg. All of these caused the city to grow rapidly. Two historic districts are located in the downtown area of Clarksburg. One of them is predominantly residential, the other commercial and they are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The buildings in this area represent different architectural styles from the Late Victorian period composed of Italianate, Greek Revival and Renaissance designs. |
