Charles Town Circuit Court is the Twenty-Third Circuit Court of Jefferson County in the Judicial Circuit Court system of West Virginia.
About the area
The trial and execution of John Brown, the famous abolitionist was held in Charles Town. John Brown with a group of insurgents, including African Americans, crossed the Potomac into Virginia at Harper's Ferry and took over the Baltimore & Ohio railroad bridge, the United States armory and arsenal near the B & O, and the rifle factory above the town on the Shenandoah. However, the Jefferson Guards, from Charles Town, arrived, soon followed by the Hamtramck and the Shepherdstown troop, from Shepherdstown, and Alburtis' company from Martinsburg and took John Brown into custody, returning him to Charles Town for trial.
