About the area |
The gentleman for whom the town was named was one of the first settlers in the Kanawha Valley and the founder of Charleston. He first saw the valley in the 1770's but then he and his family were asked by the governor of Virginia to lead a party of Greenbrier County Rangers in the late 1780's. This group constructed a stockade, a two-story fort, and sturdy cabins for protection against Indian attacks. This fort was at the mouth of the Elkâ or Clendeninâs Station and later became known as Fort Lee. |
