About the area
This is another of the towns around here which had trouble settling on a name. Originally called Elizaville, then later Browntown then finally as the 20 century dawned, Marmet for the Marmet Coal Company. The town is the site of the Market Locks and Dam built in the 1930's by the by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Kanawha river. A few miles to the West of Marmet you will Kanawha State park. This over 9000 acre forest is rich in diverse wildflower and bird populations including nesting habitats for 19 species of wood warblers. The park is known for its picnic areas and trails for hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing. Its fully equipped campground sites can handle small camper units, pop-up and tent camping.
Prosecutors
SR 61 and SR 94 are two major roads which meet in Marmet and SR 94 intersects the West Virginia Turnpike (IS 64/IS 77) to the East of town.
