About the area
As the first settlers came to the area towards the end of the 18th century, the town was known as Forks of Buffalo where the West fork of Buffalo Creek was known as Warrior's Fork, and the North Fork was known as Pyle's Fork. Many settlers met their fate at the hands of the Indians either through murder or capture. Most of the early population did not settle in Mannington but in the nearby area. However after a few turnovers of the land around the forks through successive purchases; the land was sold to a surveyor who laid out plots which he sold. A number of log houses began to be built on these parcels and by 1850 when a tavern appeared in the heart of town it soon became known unofficially as Koon Town for the owner of the tavern. Around 1856 the town officially became known as Mannington, named after a civil engineer with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. With the coming of the railroad came heavier industry to the Mannington area and around 1889, when oil was discovered here and soon after natural gas the town enjoyed a thriving economy. ,
