About the area |
In the late 1770's a settler and his wife settled on a large parcel of land along the Ohio river where Benwood and McMechen now stand. However, it was due to the bequeathing of several hundred acres of his father's estate to the settlers' son, where he built his homestead and farm, that Benwood owes its beginning. Early in the 1850's the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad decided to bridge the Ohio and come to Benwood. In the 1880's the development of several of the largest steel mills in Benwood brought in thousands of workers and their families. |
