About the area |
The stone structure fashioned in the castellated Gothic architectural style characterized by turrets and battlements adorning it like a castle was once the home of the West Virginia Penitentiary. It is now possible to tour this facility and and see the rows of cramped 5 foot by 7 foot cells. Those who are brave enough can take the midnight tour and stay on your own till 6 A.M. The prison first opened its doors in the late 1870's and closed for good around 1995. The Marshall County Historical Society museum is a wonderful place to visit, but if you don't get there between April and October it won't be open. The exhibits range from artifacts from area businesses of the past to farm implements, to period costumes, to an old drugstore soda fountain. |
