| About the area |
The town was named after the Keystone Coal & Coke Company which founded the town early in the 1890's and its first mine produced coal for close to 94 years. Around 1928, eight miners lost their lives in an explosion in Mine No. 2. The mines passed through several ownerships each of which produced large amounts of coal from the mines in this town. Another company which established its business here was the Eastern Fuel and Gas Company. At present the mines and processing plant are owned by a Russian company. |
