About the area |
At one of the worst times in West Virginia's history, around the time of the coal and railroad explosion; this town was incorporated. For over 80 years the War Memorial building commemorating the service of African-American soldiers during WW I has stood in this town. This building in classical Greek style suffered deterioration, abandonment and a fire around 1991 leaving only its exterior shell intact. With
funding provided through a combination of sources the memorial was restored and is now open for special events and tours.
