About the area |
Bramwell was founded around 1888 and about the same time the Bank of Bramwell was formed as a result of a meeting with three who came to seek their fortunes from the discovery of the Pocahontas coal field and one of whom gave his name to the town. Six short years later the bank issued a 100 percent stock dividend. The bank continued to profit and just prior to 1920 its profits for such a small bank were tremendous. However in a prelude to the great depression; the bank's profits fell and around 1933 a stockholders' meeting was held to approve liquidation plans which resulted in final liquidation and 100 percent return to the creditors twenty five years later. The well preserved Victorian and Tudor style mansions in this town reflect the large fortunes made by local coal barons and at the turn of the century fourteen millionaires resided here. |
