About the area |
The land where Piedmont now stands was part of a grant by King Charles around 1664 to four members of the beknighted group. One of them bought out the others. When 1815 dawned only one settler remained on the land. An entrepreneur secured the land near Piedmont in the 1830's and when his plans fell through he sold to another businessman who convinced the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad to burn coal in its locomotives which coal came from the Piedmont area. In the early 1840's when the railroad came to Piedmont and built engine houses and repair facilities it caused a surge in the area's economy and by the mid 1850's the city had more than 150 buildings and a population of 1200. The Henry Gassaway Davis mansion, which is listed on the the National Register of Historic Places, is the home of the Piedmont Historic Preservation Foundation. |
