On the historic Chesapeake & Ohio Canal there is a 24 foot high, about 3100 foot long tunnel lined with approximately six million bricks whose entrance can be seen from the last curve of the restored canal towpath. This is the Paw Paw tunnel which was started around 1836 and took 14 years to complete. It is open the year round and was the scene of numerous confrontations and stalemates in the use of the canal when two mule-pulled boats met head to head in the one-lane tunnel. The history of the ordeal in construction of the tunnel are replete with with stories of violence, murder and unpaid wages and at one point construction was halted due to lack of funds. To get in on some terrific music, great food, drink and shopping from a number of vendors with crafts and handiwork to sell attend the annual AvalonFest Music festival at the Avalon Resort and campground in August. You can take advantage of the free tent that comes with your ticket.
