About the area
During the fifth decade of the 18th century, two English settlers built a cabin on the banks of the Greenbrier River near where Marlinton is now located. A couple of years after they established their land; a team came to survey a land grant for the Greenbrier company and found the early settlers already living there. Around 1822 the county seat was established at Huntersville, but sixty-nine years later the county's residents voted to move the county seat to Marlinton. At the time, the town had only about 100 residents; however a gift of $5,000, made through the Pocahontas Development Company, for construction of the courthouse if the county seat was moved to Marlinton cinched it. Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century, the railroad came to Marlinton and the town really began to grow. The Pocahontas County Opera House is the scene of musical performances, plays, square dances and the particularly enjoyable Opry Night
