About the area
The first settlers in Kingwood came around 1807 and they named the town for the grove of trees located where the courthouse now stands. Around 1818 Preston county was formed in the upstairs bedroom of Price's Tavern originally as a county in Virginia and named for James Patton Preston, governor of Virginia, from 1816 to 1819. There is an old home here worth visiting; the James Clark McGrew house, circa 1841, the Federal and Italianate architectural styles which has been renovated as is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Bucklew museum is housed on the first floor of the Courthouse and holds t and displays the collections of one of the members of the Bucklew family including Indian arrowheads and military items.
