SR 34 and SR 817 run together through Winfield until they separate midway through town and SR 34 goes North across the Kanawha river.
About the area
Although there were settlers to the area in the 1770's, Winfield was established in the 1840's on atract of land owned by one of its first entrepreneurs who started a ferry service across the Kanawha river before the end of the second decade of the 19th century. The town was incorporated in the late 1860's and named for the commanding General of the American army during the War with Mexico. The historic James w. Hoge House, Putnam County’s first courthouse, circa 1838 is on the National Register of Historic Places. This three-room house belonged to a man with a big career who was a delegate to the 1861 secession convention but voted against secession. He then served as a circuit judge after the Civil War.
