To experience the history of a resource that was significant in the economy of West Virginia and this town visit Beckley Exhibition Coal and the Youth Museum. This museum recently reopened after an extensive renovation which included the Rahall Company Store, visitor center, coal museum, fudgery and gift shop. There is a huge collection of mining artifacts and tools, geological specimens, photographs and other items representative of early life among the coal towns of this region. The authentic "man cars" awaiting you for a tour that takes visitors below ground led by an experienced veteran coal miner. On this tour you will travel approximately 1500 feet beneath the hillsides from the mine entrance to old working areas of the coal mine and back. At different locations there are parts of the tunnel which are examples of low-seam coal mining from the hand-loading days into the era of modern mechanization. |
