About the area
A railroad capitalist was recruited to try and restore the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad. Much of it had been destroyed during the Civil War. His tour through the land owned by one family, which was to later become Hinton, convinced him to rebuild along the river. After purchasing the original tract of land owned by this family of early settlers, the railroad sold off what wasn't needed for the railroad to a newly established land company at the beginning of 1873. The land included in this area was laid out in lots and sold off. THe city was incorporated around 1880, and it became one of the railroad's main line division terminals where crews were assembled and machine shops were constructed ; leading to the construction of housing for families of the crews and workingmen. The building boom in the prosperous years between 1895 and 1907 led to the erection of buildings which are still standing in the National Historic district of this city; the Hinton Marble Works, Tomkies building, Citizens bank, Laing, Humphries & Company, Elks Hall, the Big Four Building and Hotel McCreery.
