About the area |
A German immigrant couple who settled near present day Camden-on-Gauley around were the first European settlers in Webster County. However, their house was raided by Shawnee Indians who murdered the wife and children and set the house afire. The husband witnessed the massacre on returning to the house and recruited several other settlers to join him on a raid of the Bulltown settlement of Indians whom he believed were responsible. The resulting Massacre of Bulltown increased hostilities between the Indians and the settlers and no one tried to settle in the county for the next twenty years.
