About the area

In the 1840's it was not unusual for steamboats on the Little Kanawha River to make a stop in Elizabeth. Now one of the favorite destinations of residents for an a day out is Sportsman's park on the river. With shelters, game and tennis courts, boating access, a walking trail and amphitheater there is plenty to do here. If you drive out on Route 5 you will come to Burning Springs park the oil field park on the site of the Rathbone Well. It is the oldest producing oil and gas well in West Virginia. There is even a small museum there which plays a video tape with the story of the site.
