About the area |
Around 1798, an Englishman, who first emigrated to Virginia several years earlier, found a level tract of land just below what now comprises Oceana and settled there with his family around 1802. After a few years more settlers came to the area. As the year 1890 dawned two-thirds of this county were descendants of this settler and he is called the father of Oceana Community. The The town of Oceana was laid out around 1850 from land owned by a son of this early settler, one year after the formation of Wyoming county and the selection of Oceana as the first county seat. The first building in the town was the store house of a merchant. The Wyoming County Historical museum has exhibits representative of the history of the county from prehistoric times through the Civil War. |
