Luke Bonney & William Smith 1st settled Bonney Hill; Edwin Merchant purchased land that briefly bore his name, Merchantville; later changed to Thurston, for William Thurston, principal landowner in the area; Nobel Rising was the 1st postmaster. Located along County Rd 333, Town of Thurston was formed in 1844, and includes the hamlets of Bonney Hill, Risingville, North Thurston, South Thurston & Thurston, next to Michigan (Otter) Lake.
