Each August, Skowhegan is home to the Skowhegan State Fair. Come see the Demolition Derby; one of the best “Smash em” “Crash em” Demo derbies around. Nowhere else will you see this many pull competions in one place; truck pulls, tractor pulls and horse pulls. Livestock shows, a battle of the bands, entertainment in the park, harness racing and rides as well as plenty of food are all a part of this fair. Skowhegan's Municipal bulding is the pride of the city. After its original construction in the early 1900's; it has undergone many upgrades and renovations. Oak woodwork appears throughout the building and patterned tin ceilings adorn many rooms. Its public hall, a 100 seat auditorium, is known as the Skowhegan Opera House. THe building houses the Municipal courtroom and municipal offices where Margaret Chase Smith started her lifetime of public service as a high school girl who assisted with the tax assessment books.
