COMMENTS
Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB) is quite different from most traffic courts in the state. There is no plea bargaining. The cop may get as many as three chances to appear, and they usually show up by the third time. A good lawyer can cross examine the cop, and sometimes they can be beaten. TVB cases can be appealed to the Appeals Processing Unit in Albany.
ABOUT THE AREA
This TVB is in the Coney Island area, which is really a peninsula on the southwestern edge of Long Island. Coney Island was known for its amusement parks, and there may still be some rides there. The area is now also known for a population of Russian immigrants as well as the Brooklyn Cyclones baseball team.
JUDGES
New York City traffic court cases are presided over by an Administrative Law Judge who is really a DMV employee.
PROSECUTORS
Officers prosecute their own tickets in New York City traffic courts. Some cynical attorneys say that the ALJ (the judge) behaves like a marsupial, but that might be going a bit far.
TYPE OF CASES
Traffic violations only (no parking tickets)
