ABOUT THE AREA
The area originaly known as the Black Warrior Village was in existence before 1600. It was unoccupied in the middle of the 1700's and then resettled around 1800 by Native American tribes. It wasn't until just before 1820 that the first Non-Native American settler came to the area followed by several other families. Around 1820 Tuscaloosa was plotted and lots were sold at auction. In the early 1830's, the University of Alabama began operations with just over 50 students. Just before the Civil War the University of Alabama became a military university. For those who want to come to or leave Tuscaloosa by air; the city owned Tuscaloosa Regional Airport is a great facility It has two runways, the larger of which is close to 7000 feet in length; can operate in all kinds of weather and can accomodate regional flights and corporate jets. The airport is equipped with a control tower, a terminal building and a fire/crash station.
