A rural county rich in economic diversity - farming, manufactoring, tourism, wineries & historic museums. The county abounds with lakes & wildlife - excellent fishing, and rumored to have the most deer in the state. "Friendship Grove" (Hornell City) the oldest pet cemetery in the US, 2nd oldest in the world, includes such notables as Baron von Schnaps (German Police dog, mascot aboard the USS Lexington); Mr. Bum (mascot of USS Texas) & Swaller (mascot of the fire department, who died in the line of duty); in 1921 (Hammondsport) 5 local men began the Aerial Service Corp, which, after several expansions, helped outfit Byrd's Artic Expedition; 1809 - Benjamin Brookins started a cabin on Purdy Creek (Hartsville) - until his ax handle broke, & he abandoned it. A year later, Joseph Purdy, 1st permanent settler, completed Brookins' cabin (it's still lived in); in 1829, Rev. William Bostwick (Urbana) planted grape cuttings in the rectory garden - and began what would become a major industry - Taylor Winery; among the many places listed in the Registry of Historic Places are Jennings Tavern (Corning); Germania Wine Cellars (Hammondsport) & the Hornell Public Library.
