There are no major roads passing through Brookside; the main street well being Main street runs thoughh the whole town.

Brookside was once a a thriving mining town but its coal driven economy crashed in the 1920’s forcing the local mining company to close its doors. The This town really believes in canoeing as a recreational sport even owning the Five Mile Creek Canoe and Company. Each March it's time for the Greenway Festival in Brookside. The festival features a hike along the Five Mile Creek Greenway walking path followed by a dinner where the major dish is Russian Boar. The festival's attractions also include short family rides in a canoe on Five Mile Creek, a Fishing tournament, Mountain Bike race and guided tour of the local historic graveyards; Russian orthodox, Founders Cemetery and the grave of a revolutionary war solider.
