US 31 runs through this city as well and connects with Fieldstown Road to provide access to IS 65 on the West.

This northern suburb of Birmingham has a good sized population of about 14,000. The early settlers of this area were mostly veterans of the War of 1812 who recognized the beauty of the area. At the outbreak of the Civil War only a dozen families had claimed land in the area. When the surrounding coal mines opened in the 1870s, Gardendale's population doubled. A grist mill, canning plant for fruits and vegetables and a general store were soon opened. Gardendale was not incorporated as a city until the 1950's. The city is really moving ahead with a new Civic Center and a new state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center. The Civic Center is equipped with meeting rooms, a 6,000 something square foot exhibition hall, a cardiovascular room, two weight rooms, aerobic room, basketball court, racquetball court and a cushioned indoor track. The Performing Arts Center hosts dramatic and concert performances.
