River Vale was once upon a time referred to as the 'Over Kill' neighborhood, because it was over the kill (on the other side of Hackensack River, kill being the Dutch word for creek). The town has a close-knit community replete with clubs and organizations that work to improve the quality of life of the residents by providing high quality recreation. The town has a 'River Vale Neighbors Helping Neighbors Association', a unique organization committed to the general welfare of the township. All it's soldiers are good-hearted people who believe in doing a little good, either by lending a helping hand or by raising funds for such clubs. The River Vale Senior Friendship Club offers educational & recreational services to town residents above the age of 55. Interestingly, a mass grave site was discovered in the town in 1967. It turned out that it was from the Baylor Massacre in late 1700s. Now, a park stands in place of the grave site.
