ABOUT THE AREA
All those who know of the Father of the Blues, W.C. Handy, probably don't know he was born in a small log cabin in Florence. The cabin is now part of the W.C. Handy Home, Museum & Library. Handy was a musician, band conductor, and author and the museum houses a collection of memorabilia, musical instruments including his famous trumpet and personal piano, personal papers and original sheet music. The Florence Indian Mound is the Tennessee Valley area's largest mound used as a dwelling. It typifies the workmanship of the Indians who lived in this area before the Cherokees, Chickasaws, and Creeks. It is now part of a museum site which houses Native American artifacts dating back over 10,000 years which are arranged in chronological order.
